CHAPTER 25

A half hour later in the parking lot of the Wind River Casino, he called Cass’s cell from the car. He didn’t want to waste time walking around looking for her or surprise her with another guy. It’d been years since they were together as a couple, but he tried to avoid seeing her with someone else. The few times it happened, history had staked a claim and left him racked with toxic jealousy.

She answered on the first ring, her voice a soft purr he associated with alcohol or waking from sleep.

“You here?”

“Parking now.”

“I’m in the room. Come up. Three thirty-one.”

Before he could say no, she ended the call. Time to get business out of the way first. He knew her sleep habits, and from the way she sounded, he figured she’d already be asleep again.

The Wind River Casino had more business than the Shoshone Rose. He made his way through the lobby and followed the signs to the administrative offices, down a long narrow corridor away from the noise and crowds. He found the reception area for casino security at the end of the hallway secured behind a reinforced glass wall.

A woman with waist-length hair sat at a glass desk smoking while a big man bent over her and nuzzled her neck. When the security buzzer announced his arrival, they both froze. She crushed the cigarette and fanned the air. Alonzo Smith disappeared behind the door with a brass nameplate that identified him as Director of Security Operations.

When Antelope reached the security window, the woman gave him a flirtatious smile leftover from the scene he witnessed. A jolt of interest, a sexual thrill being near her.

“What can I do for you?”

Her magnified voice echoed through the security sound system, surprisingly masculine and robotic.

Up close under the glare of fluorescent lights, gray streaks in pale blond hair, fine lines at her eyes.

He placed his Sheriff’s Department ID into the tray, and she took her time examining it and passed it back to him.

He asked for Alonzo Smith.

She pressed a button on the white desk phone.

“Sweetwater County detective out here, sir.”

“All right, send him my way, Yvette.”

Alonzo Smith had the smooth baritone voice of a radio announcer.

Her use of the word sir, his brusque manner had Antelope picturing the two of them in a dominant-submissive sex scene.

Alonzo Smith, a tall black man with a gray goatee that matched his three-piece suit, stood behind a bigger glass desk flanked by two white leather chairs.

“Must be something big going on to get Sweetwater County here on a holiday,” Alonzo Smith said.

Antelope sat and gave him a brief description of the case and the reason for his presence in the casino.

“Here in the Wind River Casino, we’re always happy to cooperate with law enforcement. Of course, there are policies in place, and we must proceed through the proper channels. I’ll have Yvette prepare the paperwork. Fill it out and she’ll do the rest.”

A different league altogether, mentioning Clay’s name would gain him nothing. He filled out the paperwork provided.
